Omnilux Clear FAQ's

What is Omnilux CLEAR?

Based on the world’s leading Omnilux MedicalTM light therapy technology, CLEAR is an FDA-cleared flexible, portable, affordable home-use device that uses light emitting diodes (LED) to reduce or eliminate mild to moderate acne vulgaris and reduce the appearance of redness and inflammation.

How does it work?

Optimized energy output and two clinically proven wavelengths of light (red 633nm and blue 415nm) work on a cellular level to kill acne-forming bacteria in the sebaceous glands.

Is Omnlux Clear safe?

Over 40 clinical studies and nearly 20 years of experience have proven that Omnilux light therapy is safe for all skin types*, with no pain and no downtime. Omnilux CLEAR generates no heat or UV light and is safe for all persons over 14 years of age.

*Please note that people with a predisposition to pigmentation or photosensitivity and people with darker skin tones (types IV, V and VI on the Fitzpatrick Scale) may experience transient pigmentation with blue light therapy. This is often short lived and resolves on its own in most cases with discontinued use. If there are any concerns, we recommend consulting your dermatologist or professional skincare provider.

What is the treatment regimen?

We recommend a course of treatments: 4 10-minute treatments per week for 6 weeks. Once the initial series is complete, use Omnilux CLEAR at the earliest signs of a breakout.

Can I use Omnilux CLEAR with my current skincare products?

Omnilux CLEAR is compatible with most skin care routines, however we do not recommend using your device in conjunction with Accutane or retinol products. We recommend speaking with your prescribing physician before using the Omnilux CLEAR with prescribed products.

Do I need eye protection with the Omnilux CLEAR?

All Omnilux devices have been tested to the highest internationally recognised eye safety standards and have been deemed safe to use on uncovered eyes. However, some people may find that they are sensitive to blue light, so we have equipped our CLEAR device with built-in eye shields for comfort.

How does CLEAR compare to the Omnilux Medical professional system?

The entire Omnilux LED collection was created for at-home use meaning you are able to receive professional-grade light therapy treatments at your convenience and from the comfort of home. Because Omnilux CLEAR sits in close proximity to the skin, it is able to deliver comparable therapeutic doses of light compared to the Omnilux professional system.

Can I use CLEAR while moving around or do I have to remain plugged into a wall outlet while in use?

CLEAR is completely portable and battery powered so you can easily walk or move around while wearing it. You only need to plug it into an outlet to recharge the battery, which lasts for approximately 100 minutes, or 10 treatments.

Can I use it more frequently than the 4x per week instructed in your User Guide?

No. CLEAR has not been studied for this. Therefore, we recommend using your device 4 times per week for 6 weeks. Once the initial series is complete, use Omnilux CLEAR at the earliest signs of a breakout.

How many LEDs does CLEAR have?

CLEAR has a total of 132 LEDs (66 red and 66 blue) encased in 66 bulbs.

What does CLEAR do?

One of the key bacteria responsible for acne is P.acnes. This bacteria produces natural chemicals called porphyrins, which are sensitive to light at 415nm (blue) wavelengths. If stimulated, these chemicals will neutralise the bacteria and with no bacteria present, inflammation will subside. Omnilux CLEAR stimulates these chemicals and eradicates the bacteria that causes redness or inflammation associated with acne. This is combined with 633nm red light which targets acne bacteria deeper in the sebaceous glands and has anti-inflammatory properties, which minimises the redness of acne lesions and promotes healthier skin.

Does LED light therapy actually work?

Yes. There are many independent peer-reviewed published clinical studies validating the effectiveness of LED phototherapy. Since 2003, Omnilux devices have been specifically profiled in over 40 of these studies, with applications ranging from skin rejuvenation, acne, pigmentation and other common skin conditions.

How long does it take LED light therapy to work?

Improvements in skin conditions vary, as everyone’s skin is different and requires different needs. In all cases, we recommend 4 treatments per week for 6 weeks. Once the initial series is complete, use Omnilux CLEAR at the earliest signs of a breakout.

What does an LED acne mask do for your face?

Omnilux CLEAR reduces mild to moderate acne vulgaris on the face, while also reducing the appearance of redness and inflammation.

Do LED light masks really work?

Yes. The Omnilux CLEAR device is FDA-cleared for efficacy and safety and uses Omnilux technology that is clinically proven to produce medical-grade results. However not all LED masks are created equal. Some brands are less powerful and lack the clinical studies or FDA-clearance that demonstrate proven effectiveness.

What does red LED light do for skin?

Red light reduces inflammation, boosts blood oxygen levels in the skin, and reduces sebum (oil) production by targeting the sebaceous gland.

What does blue LED light do for skin?

Blue light works on a cellular level to neutralise and kill acne-forming bacteria in the sebaceous glands which causes acne.

Are light therapy masks safe?

All Omnilux products are FDA-cleared for safety and effectiveness for all skin types. Omnilux products conform to all US and international testing standards for safety, including eye safety.

Will this help with psoriasis, rosacea or eczema?

There is significant data suggesting that both red and blue light successfully treat psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. However, CLEAR has not been specifically tested, nor FDA-cleared, for these conditions.

Is light therapy safe to use with Retinol or RetinA?

For users taking prescriptive levels of Retin A such as Tretinoin, we do not recommend the use of light devices. Retin A should be discontinued for at least 5 days before performing light therapy treatments. Those using cosmetics/skincare products containing retinol should read the skincare instructions carefully for warnings and precautions in relation to exposure to light. Cosmetics/skincare products containing retinol may be used with the CLEAR device if there are no precautions in relation to exposure to light.

Can I use the Omnilux CLEAR if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Our products have not been studied in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Red and blue light therapy is very safe overall but because we do not have enough information about use while pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend not using unless approved by your doctor.

How does Omnilux Contour FACE differ from Omnilux CLEAR?

Omnilux Contour FACE is specifically designed for anti-aging and skin-damage prevention. Omnilux CLEAR is specifically designed to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris. They utilise different wavelengths (colours) of light.

What wavelengths of light does CLEAR use?

CLEAR utilises red light (633nm) in combination with blue light (415nm).

Can I use a light moisturiser before Omnilux treatments?

Skin should be clean and clear of any topicals, or substances prior to treatment. Apply your favourite moisturiser after treatment.

Will CLEAR make my pores smaller?

There is ample evidence that red light therapy (embedded in the Omnilux CLEAR) will help reduce the appearance of pore size.

Why does CLEAR come with built-in eye shields and FACE does not?

Although CLEAR has been FDA-cleared, as well as tested and conforms to medical device standards including IEC/EN 62471 Photobiological eye safety standards, some people may be overly sensitive to blue light. We have therefore included built-in eye shields with CLEAR.

Can I use CLEAR if I am also on Accutane (Isotretinoin)?

We do not recommend the use of light therapy devices while taking this medication. If you have stopped taking the medication for at least 5 days, the treatment can be safely administered. If you are unsure, please consult your prescribing physician.

I have severe acne, will CLEAR help with this?

Omnilux CLEAR is intended to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris of the face. Omnilux CLEAR is NOT indicated for severe acne. Please consult your physician for a more appropriate treatment.

Will CLEAR help with acne scarring?

Omnilux CLEAR may help to reduce and soften the appearance of acne scarring.

Does CLEAR prevent future breakouts?

Omnilux CLEAR significantly reduces the duration of current breakouts when used at the first sign of a breakout. Data also suggests that blue light therapy helps prevent future breakouts.

Is CLEAR safe for all ages?

Omnilux CLEAR is intended for all persons over 14 years of age.

Does CLEAR allow you to use red and blue light independently?

CLEAR utilises red light (633nm) in combination with blue light (415nm). Both wavelengths work in unison to treat mild to moderate acne. They cannot be operated independently.

Why do the lights look purple?

When red and blue light are combined and illuminated together, the eye perceives the output colour as purple.

How can I clean my Omnilux CLEAR device?

Gently wipe down your device with a water-based wipe after treatment. For deeper clean, gently wipe your device down with a 70% nonirritating alcohol. Air dry.

Can I use CLEAR with products containing Salicylic acid?

You can continue to use a Salicylic gel and or face wash as part of your acne regime, however it is important that your skin is fully cleansed before each Omnilux CLEAR treatment. In addition, those using skincare products containing Salicylic acid should read the skincare instructions carefully for any warnings and precautions in relation to exposure to light. If you are unsure if your skincare products are compatible with light therapy, please consult your dermatologist or physician prior to using Omnilux CLEAR with Salicylic acid products.

Can I use CLEAR with products containing Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl Peroxide products typically have a drying effect on the skin so it is advised to use caution if using CLEAR with any over-the-counter products containing this ingredient. Do not apply any products to your skin prior to LED treatment. Those using skincare products containing Benzoyl Peroxide should read the skincare instructions carefully for any warnings and precautions in relation to exposure to light. If you are using prescription-strength Benzoyl Peroxide or are unsure if your skincare products are compatible with light therapy, please consult your dermatologist or physician prior to using Omnilux CLEAR.
